Test and learn
If you're learning a new skill at work,
'test and learn' can apply here too. 🤯
How did I learn to create animated explainers in one year?
I made a short-form web series to test and learn, super fast! 💥
Two Words was a weekly Youtube series in 2016-17 with a simple concept: simplify movies, books, games into... two 👏 words 👏.
Each sketch would be 10 - 30 seconds. ⌛️
The series picked up 18K views, enough to get frequent feedback on what worked, and what didn't. 😄/🥱
By making regular short-form content, I learned 2D animation at lightning speed ⚡️, channeling years of stop-motion experience into something new. 🕺
It was a step-change from my stop-motion animation, completed two years earlier, which took FOUR YEARS to make (and that was only four minutes long).
Every week I'd:
✅ Analyse stats for audience retention
✅ Adjust the pacing and length to maximise watch time
✅ Plan out a new visual pun
✅ Design new characters and environments in Adobe Illustrator
✅ Animate actions and lip sync in Adobe After Effects
👎 Some sketches failed to hit the spot.
👍 Some sketches I'm still proud of to this day.
📈 BOTH taught me what to do next.
If you want to make video content for your business...
Don't be afraid to try new ideas. You'll find gold much faster. 🏆
